Peter Kerekes is a film director, producer and teacher.
„Wihing on a star“ (2022) – is a documentary comedy about ani talian astrologist Luciana, her clients searching for love and fulfilling their wishes. Its worls premier took place at the 80 Venice international film festival, in Orrizonti competition.
„107 mothers“ (2021) – is his fiction debut, a story from the prison no 74 in Odesa, where mothers can spend time together with their children. Its world premiere took place at the 78 Venice international film festival, in Orrizonti competition, where it received award for the best script.
The film was nominated for the European film awards. It won many awards at internationla film festivals, including Chicago IFF, Les Arcs, Award of Arab film critiques, Cottbus film festival and 4 awards at slovak national film award – for the best actress, best script, best director and best film.
“Velvet terrorists”(2013) - is a documentary comedy of three protagonists who opposed the communist regime in Czechoslovakia. The film was honored at several festivals, including the „Tagesspiegel audience prize“ at Berlin International Film Festival, 2014 and FEDEORA award the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, 2013.
“Cooking History” (2009) – a documentary film about military cooks, how their cooking changed the history. The film was in production for five years and was filmed in 11 different European countries. It won many awards at international festivals, including the Jury Prize at Hot Docs International Documentary Festival, the Best Documentary Award at Viennale, and was nominated for the best documentary at the European Film Awards.
“66 Seasons” (2003) - documentary about the swimming pool in Kosice, showing 66 years of the popular spot as well as 66 years history of Central and Eastern Europe.The film was screened at over a hundred festivals and won among others, the following awards: best European documentary at JihlavaInternational Documentary Film Festival 2003, Best Director, DocAviv, 2004.
Kerekes also produced the omnibus documentary „Occupation 1968“ (2018), which maps the occupation of Czechoslovakia from the perspective of 5 directors coming from 5 different countries (Evdokia Moskvina, Linda Dombrovszky, Magdalena Szymkow. Elisa Marie Scheidt, Stephan Komandarev)
As a co-producer he took part in various projects for example „Stepne“ (2023) by Maryna Vroda, „Fragile memory“ (2022) by Ihor Ivanko, „Cauht in the net “ (2020) by Vít Klusák & Barbora Chalupová and „The Wind. Documentary thriller“(2019) by Michał Bielawski.
Peter Kerekes is teaching at Academy of Performing Artrs in Bratislava and at the DocNomads – joint masters in Budapest.
