Maarten Vanvolsem is a photographic artist fascinated by the boundaries of photography and the photographic image. Time plays a central role in his research and practice. In his PhD, “The experience of time in still photographic images” (2006) and publication “The Art of Strip Photography” (2011), he proposes a use of photography in which rhythm, speed and pace are given a very particular interpretation. Important aspects of his practice are the search for appropriate techniques (technology); he therefore builds his own cameras. With adapted spatial forms of presentation, he stimulates visual experiences.
Maarten studied photography in Brussels, was a researcher at the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht (NL) for two years, started his PhD at Newcastle University (UK) and defended his PhD at KU Leuven. He was vice-dean of education for LUCA School of Arts and is currently the expertise director there for Artistic Paradigm & Methods.
