CresCine is a research project dedicated to enhancing the competitiveness and cultural diversity of the European film industry. By focusing on small markets, CresCine aims to understand their unique challenges, empower local industries, and drive meaningful transformation. The project is being piloted in Estonia, Lithuania, Denmark, Ireland, Belgium (Flanders), Croatia, and Portugal.
As part of the FilmEU Cosmos, CresCine includes several FilmEU institutions among its partners. A recent report from the project explores key themes in film distribution, addressing the evolving balance between traditional theatrical releases and the growing impact of digital platforms. While the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated digital-first strategies, the study finds that most distributors have returned to conventional theatrical models, recognizing the lasting value of cinema-going experiences.
The research highlights the flexibility of distributors in adapting release plans to different markets and genres while maintaining the appeal of theatrical releases. These insights contribute to the broader goal of ensuring a sustainable and diverse future for European cinema.
